When a plug falls out of the wall or a switch feels hot to the touch, it is more than an annoyance. Loose receptacles, cracked faceplates, and outlets that only work when you wiggle the cord are signs of worn internal contacts or damaged mounting tabs. These problems can lead to arcing, short circuits, or fire hazards if left alone.

Our crew starts by flipping the breaker and testing the circuit with a non-contact voltage tester to confirm it is dead. We remove the old device, inspect the box for damage or loose wiring, and trim any frayed copper. New receptacles or switches are wired to the correct terminals, secured with machine screws, and tested with a plug-in tester before restoring power.

The time and cost vary with the type of device, standard outlets are straightforward, while GFCI or tamper-resistant models take longer to install. Box condition matters: a crushed or undersized box may need replacement, which adds cutting and patching. Access behind finished walls or tight crawl spaces can slow the work, and older wiring may need careful handling to avoid cracking insulation.

On the day of the job, we lay drop cloths to protect floors and furniture. After the repair, we vacuum dust, wipe down the cover plate, and make sure the faceplate sits straight. Homeowners should clear the area around the outlet or switch and let us know if any other devices in the room act strangely. No special prep is needed beyond that.
