What counts as a real problem

Not every flicker or pop means trouble. A light that dims briefly when a large appliance kicks on is normal in many homes, the motor draw causes a temporary voltage drop. But if lights flicker regularly, dim without an appliance starting, or change brightness with the weather, something is wrong. A breaker that trips once might be a one-time overload, but a breaker that trips repeatedly or for no obvious reason points to a short circuit, a ground fault, or a failing breaker itself.

Outlets that stop working entirely, especially on the same circuit, suggest a loose connection or a tripped GFCI somewhere upstream. A warm outlet or switch, as noted earlier, indicates resistance and heat buildup. A burning smell or a buzzing sound from the panel are serious, they mean arcing or overheating inside the breaker box. Any of these signs warrant a professional look. Ignoring them can turn a small repair into a larger, more expensive fix.

What you can check safely

Before calling for help, there are a few things you can check without risk. If a circuit is dead, look at your breaker panel: a tripped breaker will be in a position between on and off, or have a red indicator on some panels. Reset it by flipping it fully to off, then back to on. If it trips again immediately, do not keep resetting it, that indicates a fault. For a dead outlet, check whether a GFCI outlet in the same room or bathroom has tripped. GFCI outlets have test and reset buttons; press reset and see if power returns.

If a light fixture is out, try replacing the bulb first. If the new bulb does not work, check whether the switch is faulty by testing the fixture with a multimeter (if you are comfortable) or by trying the fixture on a known-working circuit. Never open a junction box or panel cover yourself unless you are trained and the power is off. If you smell burning or see smoke, turn off the main breaker and call for help immediately. How our crew diagnoses the issue

When we arrive, we start by asking what you noticed and when. Then we go to the breaker panel and check for tripped breakers, signs of heat damage, or loose connections. We use a multimeter and a circuit tracer to map out which outlets and lights are on which circuit. That tells us where the problem is likely located. For intermittent issues like flickering, we may use a voltage monitor or a recording meter to catch the fluctuation over time.

For a tripping breaker, we isolate the circuit by unplugging everything and turning off all switches on that circuit. Then we reset the breaker and plug devices back in one at a time. If the breaker trips when a specific appliance is plugged in, the appliance is the problem. If it trips with nothing plugged in, the issue is in the wiring, a nail through a wire, a loose connection in a junction box, or a damaged cable in the wall. We then locate the damaged section and repair or replace it. For GFCIs that trip, we test the downstream outlets to find where the ground fault is occurring.

Common causes and what they mean

Loose connections are the most common cause of intermittent problems. A wire that is not fully tightened under a screw terminal can arc, creating heat and voltage drops. Overloaded circuits happen when too many devices draw power from one breaker, a 15-amp circuit can handle about 1,800 watts total, and a single space heater can use 1,500 watts. Short circuits occur when a hot wire touches a neutral or ground, causing a sudden surge that trips the breaker. Ground faults are similar but involve a hot wire touching a grounded surface.

Old or damaged wiring is another frequent culprit. In Alexandria, many homes have wiring from the 1960s or 1970s that is still functional but frayed or brittle. Aluminum wiring, used in some homes during the 1960s and 1970s, expands and contracts with temperature changes and can loosen at connections.
